APA Congratulates Winners of Psychiatry Innovation Lab

Through its annual Innovation Lab competition, APA is doing its part to encourage the development of technology that will improve patient care.

APA held its fourth Psychiatry Innovation Lab at APA’s 2018 Annual Meeting last month, the annual competition in which innovative minds bring their ideas for ways to transform mental health care. Here are this year’s winners:
•
Alumni Award: Mohsen Omrani, M.D., Ph.D., for OPPT (The Online Psychotherapy Tool) (This award is given to the project that has made the most progress since being presented at an Innovation Zone.)
OPPT, which was pitched at the debut Innovation Lab in Atlanta at APA’s 2016 Annual Meeting, is an online platform that lets providers create online psychotherapy clinics to deliver CBT or other behavioral therapies remotely to patients.

Mentorship Award: Kelly Wang and Anna Wang for AllyIQ (This award is given to the best woman-led team; winners receive six mentorship sessions from established career women in health care and technology.)
AllyIQ is a mobile app geared toward patients with bipolar disorder. In addition to tracking symptoms, the app empowers a support network of friends, family, and clinicians to provide coaching and guidance to patients.

Human Rights Award: Victor Hirth, M.D., and Sean Christensen, M.D., for Cognova (This award is given for the idea with best potential to apply to underserved/marginalized communities.)
Cognova is an app that helps patients with cognitive impairment reminisce about their past using images, movies, or music. The experience becomes progressively more personalized with use and should boost engagement and improve quality of life.

Audience Choice Award: Jennifer Kamara for Victoria
Victoria is an addiction platform specifically targeting pregnant women. This program provides accessible, personalized addiction-management tools to help mothers-to-be improve their health and that of their unborn children.

Grand Prize Winner: Shrenik Jain for Sunrise Health
Sunrise Health is a mobile platform that provides anonymous, text-based, small-group therapy for a range of mental health issues. Using artificial intelligence, the app is scalable and allows online “chat rooms” to be created and maintained across the globe. ■
