APA Announces Candidates for 2020 Election
APA members can begin considering whom they want as their next president-elect and other leaders beginning next May now that the roster of candidates for the 2020 election is set.
The slate of psychiatrists chosen to compete for officer and trustee positions on APA’s Board in the 2020 election is made up of experienced psychiatrists who have made their mark in the field and have a wide range of backgrounds.
The candidates for president-elect are David C. Henderson, M.D., of Boston, and Vivian B. Pender, M.D., of New York City.
Henderson is psychiatrist-in-chief at Boston Medical Center and professor and chair of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine. An APA Distinguished Fellow, he has served on the Council on Research and Council on International Psychiatry and mentored in numerous APA research and early career programs. He received the Solomon Carter Fuller Award, the Presidential Commendation for Global Mental Health, and the Alexander Gralnick, M.D., Award.
Pender is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the Weill Cornell Medical College and training psychoanalyst at Columbia University. A Distinguished Life Fellow, she has served APA in leadership roles at the United Nations and her district branch and on APA components, the Assembly, and the Board of Trustees. She advocates for diversity, inclusion, and engagement. Her recent book is titled The Status of Women.
The position of treasurer, which has a two-year term, is up for election this cycle. Vying for the post are Anne Marie T. Sullivan, M.D., of New York City, and Richard F. Summers, M.D., of Bryn Mawr, Pa.
Facing off in the race for trustee-at-large are Frank Clark, M.D., of Simpsonville, S.C., Mark Komrad, M.D., of Towson, Md., and Michele Reid, M.D., of Novi, Mich. This position is for a three-year term.
Two of APA’s seven geographic Areas will vote for a trustee in this cycle. Only members within each Area may vote for their respective Area trustee. Area trustees hold three-year terms.
In the race for Area 2 trustee are James P. Kelleher, M.D., M.B.A., of Harrison, N.Y., and Glenn A. Martin, M.D., of Forest Hills, N.Y.
Competing for Area 5 trustee are Jenny Boyer, M.D., Ph.D., J.D., of Norman, Okla., and Philip L. Scurria, M.D., of Vicksburg, Miss.
The candidates for resident-fellow trustee-elect are Mariam Aboukar, D.O., a PGY-3 resident at Advocate Health Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill.; Aatif Mansoor, M.D., a PGY-3 resident at the Charleston Area Medical Center in West Virginia; and Sanya Virani, M.D., M.P.H., a PGY-4 resident at Maimonides Medical Center in New York.
The nominations were put forth by APA’s Nominating Committee, chaired by Immediate Past President Altha Stewart, M.D., and announced last month. While the slate is considered public, it is not official until the Board of Trustees approves it at its meeting next month. The winning candidates will take office at the close of APA’s 2020 Annual Meeting in May in Philadelphia.
All members for whom APA has a valid email address on file will receive an electronic ballot. Other members will receive a paper ballot along with instructions on how to vote online. All candidates as well as their supporters are strongly urged to review APA’s Election Guidelines.
Candidates’ photos and the addresses of their personal websites will be published in the December 20 issue of Psychiatric News. Voting will begin on January 2, 2020, and end on January 31, 2020, at 12:59 p.m. ET. ■
