APA is seeking applicants for the position of medical editor-in-chief of Psychiatric News. This is a compensated, influential position that offers a prime opportunity to impact psychiatric knowledge and skills. Time commitment averages 15 to 20 hours a week. Watch a brief video about the position with current Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Borenstein, M.D. Psychiatric News is the principal and official print and electronic news service and major communications vehicle to members of the Association. Its focus is on clinical, scientific, and professional issues including health policy, advocacy, educational, and legislative and judicial issues affecting psychiatry. Psychiatric News strives to be the authoritative, trusted voice of psychiatry to members as well as to patients, the public, and the press.
The medical editor-in-chief is appointed by the APA Board of Trustees. He or she works collaboratively with APA’s chief of Communications and Psychiatric News executive editor and oversees jointly with the CEO/Medical Director the implementation of Psychiatric News’ editorial philosophy and quality standards. These are the position’s major responsibilities:

Provides direction to the Psychiatric News staff regarding coverage of clinical/research news and trends based on continuous review of the literature, direct connections to the research community, and communication through various routes with APA members to identify their educational and informational needs.

Meets with APA senior staff and other leaders in the field to determine directions and trends in science and policy and develop and solicit content on these issues.

Reviews all articles on psychiatric/medical topics (and other types of articles upon request) and provides feedback to the executive editor or associate editor within a tightly defined time frame.

Helps direct Psychiatric News’ continued expansion in digital formats.
•
Encourages the engagement of residents and early career psychiatrists with Psychiatric News by identifying news and topics of interest to them and inviting submissions.
•
Solicits articles from content matter experts on clinical/research topics.
•
Solicits opinion pieces from APA members.
•
Travels to the central APA office to meet with the CEO/Medical Director and Psychiatric News staff at least twice a year. Most work is done via the Internet and telephone.
•
Attends APA’s Annual Meeting and fall component meetings.
Applicants must be APA members who have administrative experience, are passionate about disseminating news in the field of psychiatry, and are knowledgeable about print and digital communications.
The deadline for applications, which should include a letter of interest and a curriculum vitae, is July 19, 2023. The letter should include applicants’ vision for Psychiatric News’ clinical/research content and qualifications to realize this vision. Finalists will be notified by email or phone, and interviews will be scheduled thereafter.
The successful candidate will start transitioning into the position in October and assume the position effective January 1, 2024.
