Love Gadgets, Apps, and Innovative Ideas? MHIZ is the Place to Be
From panel talks to product demos to pitch contests, the Mental Health Innovation Zone will provide a host of exciting learning experiences and insight on emerging advancements in mental health care. And this year—double the MindGames competitions.
The Mental Health Innovation Zone (MHIZ) will once again be the APA Annual Meeting’s premier location to learn more about technological advancements related to mental health. From Saturday, May 4, through Tuesday, May 7, MHIZ will feature a variety of panel sessions and sponsored discussions that will highlight the new tools and resources that are shaping the psychiatry field. For this year’s go-around, attendees can learn how to use ChatGPT, launch a start-up venture, integrate artificial intelligence (AI) tools into practice, and more.
The Mental Health Innovation Zone, APA’s showcase and catalyst for the advancement of technologies in psychiatry, is dedicated to answering the question “What’s next in mental health technology?”

In addition to the expert-led discussions, the MHIZ stage will host a trio of competitive events: the Psychiatry Innovation Lab, MindGames, and —new for this year—MindGames Masters.

MindGames (Sunday, May 5, 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m.): This Jeopardy-style competition for psychiatry residents is one of APA’s most popular events. Three teams of three residents will have the opportunity to assess their knowledge on patient care, medical terminology, and psychiatric history while earning bragging rights for their program. Don’t miss the opportunity to stop by, root for your favorite team, and test your own psychiatric knowledge.

MindGames Masters (Monday, May 6, noon-1 p.m.): Why should residents have all the fun? The inaugural Masters trivia event will give three experienced psychiatrists the opportunity to showcase their knowledge in five psychiatry subspecialties: geriatric psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, forensics psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry. The finalists will be chosen based on their scores on a 100-item self-assessment related to the five subspecialities. In addition to the live competition, MindGames Masters will host an expert-led course on Sunday, May 5, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. that will review these five topics ($300, space is limited). For those interested, the deadline to complete the self-assessment for a chance on stage is March 15. However, the assessment will be available online until December 31 for anyone to take for educational purposes.

The Psychiatry Innovation Lab (Tuesday, May 7, noon-1:30 p.m.): The “pitch meeting” game that started it all, the Innovation Lab (led by the APA Innovation Committee) will give a select group of innovators a chance to sell their ideas at improving patient care with technology. The contestants will compete in front of a panel of judges and the audience, with a chance to take home the Most Promising Innovation or Audience Choice award, along with some seed funding to help get their projects up and running.
Even when the stage is quiet, the MHIZ lounge will offer attendees something to do. They will have the opportunity to directly connect with companies that are leading innovators in mental health care and perhaps see demonstrations of new products, ideas, and methods in technology.
