As we enter our 60th-anniversary year, I’m excited to share a transformative expansion of Psychiatric News that reflects the evolving landscape of mental health care. Our vision is to deepen our understanding of mental health and mental suffering by broadening our coverage across the full spectrum of psychiatric practice, from traditional clinical care to emerging technologies.
Beginning with this issue, we are launching five new sections that will help realize this vision: C-L Psychiatry, Integrated Psychiatry, Voices in Advocacy & Policy, Psychotherapy, and AI & Digital Health. These sections, chosen after carefully considering emerging needs in our field, represent key areas where psychiatry and mental health are growing and adapting. Our executive editor, Chris Durso, discusses the practical implementation of these and other developments in a separate column (see “
Executive Brief,”).
We will continue our commitment to covering advances and breakthrough developments in diagnostic formulations, neuroscience research, and biological treatments. However, we recognize that modern psychiatric and mental health care requires a more comprehensive approach that embraces medical integration and psychosocial understanding.
Consultation-liaison psychiatry, as a boundary-spanning subspecialty, serves as a crucial bridge between psychiatric care and general medicine. This section will explore how psychiatric expertise enhances medical care across specialties while keeping our field grounded in medical science. Expect to see insightful case studies and analyses of complex medical-psychiatric presentations.
Our Integrated Psychiatry section represents a fundamental shift in how we conceptualize the delivery of psychiatric care. Here we’ll examine the evolution of psychiatry as a primary care specialty, exploring innovative care models where the boundaries between mental health and primary care become increasingly fluid. This section will offer practical guidance for both psychiatrists expanding into primary care roles and primary care physicians enhancing their psychiatric care capabilities, ultimately working toward a more seamless health care experience for patients.
To balance this medical focus, our new Psychotherapy and Advocacy & Policy sections will delve into the equally vital psychosocial dimensions of mental health. Psychotherapy will examine how therapeutic relationships, counseling approaches, and coaching strategies intersect with sociocultural and structural determinants of health. Advocacy & Policy will focus on how we can better serve underrepresented communities and address systemic barriers to mental health care, spotlighting voices from the community and policymakers and exploring actionable solutions.
We also recognize the transformative potential of technology—and our AI & Digital Health section launches at a crucial moment when artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping medicine. This section will explore practical applications of AI in psychiatric and mental health practice, from diagnostic support tools to therapeutic applications, while thoughtfully examining both opportunities and ethical considerations. Given the unprecedented pace of AI development, this section will help practitioners stay informed about and critically evaluate emerging tools and approaches.
We invite our readers to actively participate in shaping these new sections. Your engagement, whether through submitting articles, sharing experiences, or providing feedback, will be crucial in making this new content meaningful and practical. We also welcome suggestions for specific topics you’d like to see covered within each section.
Through these thoughtfully chosen sections, Psychiatric News aims to serve as your comprehensive resource for understanding and advancing mental health care in all its dimensions. We look forward to embarking on this journey of growth together, fostering a more integrated, inclusive, and technologically informed approach to psychiatric care. ■
