Appreciation to Reviewers

As I mature in my role as editor of Psychiatric Services, my gratitude to reviewers grows exponentially. It is only slightly hyperbolic to say that my anticipation of reviewers’ comments can be as exciting as getting a decision on an article of which I am a coauthor! Reviewers and reviews matter. The efforts of reviewers advance science. I hope that reviewers learn as well, and the system creates synergies.

So, it is once again time to say thank you to those who contribute their time as reviewers for Psychiatric Services. I remain committed to inclusivity and efforts to expand the knowledge, expertise, and experience of reviewers, including those from marginalized communities as well as individuals with lived experience of using psychiatric services. We continue with our mission to confront structural racism within the journal and our field. We are evaluating the first round of using the Race/Racialization, Ethnicity, and Culture Checklist and will be working with its developers to modify it on the basis of what we have learned. I also hope that you have had the opportunity to enjoy the Editor’s Choice collections developed in partnership with the early-career psychiatrist advisory group, which includes individuals from a diverse range of mental health specialties.

I would like to thank all individuals who found the time to contribute reviews of manuscripts submitted to Psychiatric Services in the past 12 months. I want you all to know that I say thank you each day when I log in to the system and see how much time and effort reviewers have contributed. Peer review is at the core of our efforts to attract and publish research, reviews, and columns of the highest quality. Reviews provide our authors with critical guidance to revise and improve their manuscripts; I rely greatly on peer review to guide my decision making. I take nothing for granted. Every review takes precious time and effort.
