SA\VE: Suicide Awareness:Voices and Education—www.save.org

The mission of SA\VE is to educate people about brain diseases that if untreated can lead to suicide and to provide a forum for suicide survivors (people who have experienced loss of a loved one through suicide). Based in Minneapolis, SA\VE was started in 1989 by five suicide survivors and has about 300 active members. The organization's Web site provides information on depression and suicide, featuring special topics such as hospitalization and what to tell children about suicide. Guidelines for starting a survivors' support group and an annotated list of books about suicide and depression are also posted on the site. As part of a public awareness campaign, SA\VE sponsors billboards in major cities, which state that untreated depression is the primary cause of suicide and urge depressed people to see a doctor.
