Appreciation to Reviewers

This year I have a great deal to thank reviewers for. Psychiatric Services is the first of the journals published by the American Psychiatric Association and American Psychiatric Publishing Inc. (APPI) to implement a Web-based manuscript submission, tracking, and review system, and our reviewers have quickly adapted to a new way of doing business. Many have taken the time to send us e-mails about how easy it is to use the new system.

Whereas our desktop composition and production processes have been state-of-the-art for some time, we have heretofore had few electronic elements in place to facilitate the labor-intensive submission and review process, which relied heavily on use of the postal system, the production of multiple photocopies of manuscripts and reviews, and manual tracking. Thus, when we "went live" on July 1 with the Web-based system, Manuscript Central, we moved to performing nearly 100 percent of our work electronically.

Manuscript Central ensures confidentiality for our authors and facilitates the review process, not to mention the fact that it saves considerable mailing expenses in our already tight budget. The system allows us to quickly spot situations in which manuscripts are not receiving timely reviews. In addition, we have been able to reinstate a step in the peer review process that we had to forgo several years ago because of the costs of postage and handling: we are able once more to give each reviewer feedback on the other reviewers' comments on a particular manuscript and to let all reviewers know the editor's decision.

But there's some bad news along with the good. Although the vast majority of our editorial board members and our other reviewers like the new system—and there are no more scribbled notes from reviewers or myself for the journal staff to decipher—we've lost a few cherished, longtime reviewers who are wedded to mailed rather than downloaded hard copies or who are not availing themselves of the Manuscript Central help line if they are having difficulty using the system for the first time. Also, it is easier for reviewers to decline to review a paper when we invite them electronically—they simply reply "No thank you" to our e-mailed invitation. Thus our reviewer "decline rate" is higher, which means a delay in the review process because another reviewer must be selected and assigned.

However, most of you have enjoyed using the new system, and as the system is adopted over the next few months by the American Journal of Psychiatry and the APPI journals—the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, Psychosomatics, Academic Psychiatry, and the Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences—you'll get even more exposure to it. For now, keep up the good work; continue to give me honest, tough, and fair reviews; and drop me a personal note from time to time—it's a nice way to keep in touch. Have a great New Year.
