To the Editor: As managing editor of this journal from 1974 to 2000, I had the privilege of working with John Talbott from the beginning of his tenure as editor. John has many qualities that made him an outstanding editor, but the one I valued most was his accessibility. We always knew where to contact him. When he wasn't in his office in Baltimore, he was often in his apartment in Paris. The time difference made telephone communication difficult, so we were delighted when advances in technology gave us the fax machine. Later, we felt e-mail was invented just for us.

Being editor of the journal was not an easy job. Because of its interdisciplinary focus and the fact that it was not a benefit of APA membership—and therefore not received by all APA members—the journal was subjected to repeated challenges over the years about its role and purpose vis-à-vis APA goals. Combining the skills of a born military leader and a master politician, John would rally the troops and disarm the critics. Thanks to John's leadership, and his army of reviewers, contributors, past and present editorial board members, editorial consultants, and aides-de-camp, the journal now occupies a respected place among APA publications.

When I look back on the years I worked with John, my most vivid memories are not of the challenges we faced, the victories we won, or the progress we made, but of how gratifying it was to be part of John's team, editing this wonderful journal.
