Violent Psychiatric Patients: A Study

Abstract

In a study of a group of violent patients in a psychiatric hospital setting it was found that there are two different types, each with its own characteristic range of behavior and certain identifiable elements in the childhood/adolescent background associated with each group. One group comprises those who are often chronically homicidal and suicidal and another, those who become acutely assaultive only during the course of psychiatric illness. The importance of recognizing the different problems involved in the management of each group is stressed.
