Abstract

The successful treatment of 70 to 80 percent of patients with major depression by antidepressant drugs is emphasized. However, this success is qualified by limitations of the drugs themselves, such as a delayed onset of action and side effects, as well as by their frequent less than optimal use by clinicians.
