APA HONORS INNOVATIVE SERVICE PROGRAMS

The 2002 Psychiatric Services Gold Award for a large university or institutional program was presented by Dale P. Svendsen, M.D. (left), chair of the 2002 Achievement Awards Committee, to Cynthia C. Crone, M.N.Sc. (center), executive director, and Linda L.M. Worley, M.D., medical director of Arkansas CARES.
Two programs that strive to support mothers with mental illness and their children were awarded APA’s 2002 Psychiatric Services Gold Awards. The winners were selected from two categories: large academically or institutionally based programs and smaller, community-based programs. In addition to a plaque, each program was presented a check in the amount of $10,000 as an unrestricted cash grant from Pfizer Inc., sponsor of the 2002 awards.
The large academic or institutional Gold Award was presented to the Arkansas Center for Addictions Research, Education, and Services (Arkansas CARES). The program is based in the department of psychiatry at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. The award was given in recognition of an outstanding model program of integrated services to mothers with dual diagnoses and their children through long-term residential treatment.
The smaller, community-based program Gold Award was presented to the Wraparound Process at the Oaklawn Psychiatric Center in Elkhart, Ind. The Wraparound Process was recognized for its commitment to supporting children and their families through a strength-based approach to service provision.
In addition, certificates of significant achievement were awarded to the Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services (CASES) in New York City, the WPIC Homeless Continuum at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, and the Theiss Child Development Center, also at Western Psychiatric.
