Women’s Issues In Spotlight at Several Sessions At Annual Meeting

APA will once again sponsor the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) in conjunction with the annual meeting. The WRC is a great place for women members of APA to meet and network with each other and pick up materials on women’s programs offered by APA and other organizations.
The WRC will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, and Monday, May 20.
Special events at this year’s WRC will include an informal session for women on passing the boards, a meeting of the women’s mentoring network, and a networking meeting for district branch committees on women. The WRC is funded by a grant from Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals.
There will be a number of annual meeting sessions of interest to women, including the Committee on Women’s component workshop, “The Rules of the Club: Career Advancement for Women.” This session will be held at the Marriott in the Grand Ballroom Salon J on level 5 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22. In this workshop, four women psychiatrists will share “insider tips” on how to get ahead in psychiatry and in APA.
The Alexandra Symonds Award Lecture will be presented by this year’s recipient, Carol Nadelson, M.D., and is titled “Women’s Leadership in Medicine and Psychiatry.” It will be held on Tuesday, May 21, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in room 109A/B of the Convention Center.
Another session of interest is “Women in National Leadership Roles: Getting There and Functioning Effectively,” to be held Wednesday, May 22, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in room 202B of the Convention Center.
The Caucus of Women Psychiatrists and the Association of Women Psychiatrists will hold their annual joint meeting and reception on Monday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided, and enrollment forms for both groups will be available. More details on this meeting will appear in a future issue.
Locations for all above events will be printed in the APA program book distributed on site to all meeting registrants.
A full track of sessions of interest to women at the meeting is available online at www.psych.org/women. More information is available by contacting Tara McLoughlin, director of APA’s Office of Career Development and Women’s Programs, by phone at (202) 682-6171 or by e-mail at [email protected].
