Hostetter Retires as Foundation President

“Kind, generous, dedicated, caring” were just a few of the words used to describe psychiatrist Abram M. Hostetter, M.D., as the Foundation for the Pennsylvania Medical Society paid tribute to him for his dedication and commitment to the organization in September.
Hostetter, who has served as president of APA’s charitable arm, the American Psychiatric Foundation, for the last four years, was honored at a dinner and reception at the Hershey Hotel in Hershey, Pa., for his 22 years of service as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society.
Hostetter joined the board of the Foundation for the Pennsylvania Medical Society in 1981 and served as chair from 1986 to 2002. It was during his tenure as chair that the organization experienced its most rapid growth.
Hostetter and his wife, Pat, recently established the Abram M. Hostetter, M.D., Fund for Medical Philanthropy at the Foundation for the Pennsylvania Medical Society to support the care and well-being of physicians recovering from impairment. Proceeds from the special dinner and reception benefited the fund.
Under Hostetter’s leadership, the American Psychiatric Foundation has become a growing and important part of APA and psychiatry with a focus on raising awareness of mental illness and improving access to care. When Hostetter became president of the foundation in 1999, it had received less than $200,000 in annual contributions. In 2002, the foundation received more than $1 million.
Hostetter will retire as president of the American Psychiatric Foundation and from practicing medicine at the end of this year and will move to Charlottesville, Va. ▪
