AGLP Program To Offer CME Credit

While in San Francisco for APA’s 2003 annual meeting, attendees are invited to a symposium offering CME credit titled “Beyond Coming Out: LGBT Mental Health Across the Lifespan” on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists (AGLP) has organized this symposium, which is cosponsored by the University of California, San Francisco.

The AGLP traces its roots to the late 1960s, when gay and lesbian members of APA met informally at the annual meetings. The Caucus of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Members of the American Psychiatric Association (CGLBM-APA) was established in the mid-1970s. A task force on gay and lesbian issues was created by APA in 1978 and is now incorporated in APA as a standing committee. In 1985 the Caucus of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Members of the APA changed its name to the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists.

The AGLP provides networking and support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered psychiatrists and education and advocacy on LGBT mental health issues. Historically, the AGLP has organized a small preconference symposium on the Saturday of the APA annual meeting; however, until this year, the symposia has not offered CME credits.

Topics to be covered in this year’s symposium include developmental issues and the current state of knowledge on the epidemiology of psychiatric disorders for gay men, lesbians, and transgendered individuals. Small-group sessions will offer ample opportunity for in-depth case discussions.
