Member Involvement

This letter is in response to the December 6 column of APA President Paul Appelbaum, M.D.
I’m grateful to APA for representing our common concerns to the public and various health policymakers. Many comments have been made about members’ not staying involved in APA, but I don’t think the reasons are all that complicated. The workings of APA are complicated, and since I have a busy life, I don’t stay informed. Also, the annual or biennial turnover of most officers prevents them from being more effective. Would it help to increase the terms that our officers serve so that they can accomplish more and we can at least get acquainted before their terms are up?
