Another Residency Program Joins APA's 100% Club

The residency training program in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, D.C., is the fifth program in 2004 to have all of its psychiatry residents become members of APA.
Back row, from left: Robert Perito, M.D., Sarah Becherer, M.D., Lisa Jager, M.D., Katina Hatten, M.D., James Griffith, M.D., James Scully, M.D., Jeffrey Akman, M.D., Lynne Gaby, M.D., Kim Humann, M.D., Tanveer Ahmed, M.D., Chris Linton, M.D., Joseph Jeral, M.D. Bottom row, from left: Jonathan Greenberg, M.D., Lisa Catapano, M.D., Kavitha Rao, M.D., Asha Patton, M.D., Roukan Jazayerli, M.D., Niku Singh, M.D., Shanda Smith, M.D., Joanna Locke, M.D., Sermsak Lolak, M.D. Residents not present: Natalia Eisenberg, M.D., David Ault, M.D., and Maryam Razavi, M.D.
It joins the ranks of an exclusive organization within APA: the 100% Club. This club was established to encourage residents throughout the United States and Canada to join APA and to do so with other trainees in their programs, according to Deborah Hales, M.D., director of APA's Division of Education and Career Development.
The first 10 training programs whose residents all become APA members in the same year can submit a photo of their program members—residents, training directors, and department chair—and the photo will be turned into a poster and mailed to every medical school in the United States and Canada to encourage medical students to join APA.
“Dr. Niku Singh, our member-in-training representative to the Washington Psychiatric Society, deserves the credit in spearheading our successful resident membership drive,” said Jeffrey S. Akman, M.D., the Leon M. Yochelson Professor and chair of the GWU department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.
“Furthermore,” he noted, “we chose a day to shoot the photo when Dr. Jay Scully [APA's medical director] was participating in our resident Psychiatric Leadership Series. This unique seminar, which brings leaders in our field to meet with our residents, was conceived by our residency training director, Dr. James Griffith, and associate residency training director, Dr. Lynne Gaby, and takes advantage of our location in the nation's capital and our proximity to APA headquarters.”
More information about the 100%Club is available from Nancy Delanoche of APA's Division of Education and Career Development at (703) 907-8635. Programs that are interested in signing up all their residents should also contact Delanoche.
