In order to help family members and advocates fully understand the problems affecting young people in the juvenile-justice system and be better able to assist those youngsters, the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) has issued two guides.
“Advocacy Guide to Rights Protection for Youths in the Juvenile Justice System” is designed to raise awareness about maltreatment of youth in juvenile detention facilities, describe the rights of these youth as they pertain to education, living conditions, and discipline, and provide strategies for protecting youth against violations of their rights.
“Privatization and Managed Care in the Juvenile Justice System” explores the pros and cons of privatization and managed care in the juvenile justice system and offers strategies to ensure the best possible care for youth in privatized systems.
According to the NMHA, approximately two-thirds of youth in the juvenile-justice system have behavioral, emotional, and/or substance abuse problems.
In addition, incarcerated youth are more likely to be ethnic minorities, come from poor families, and have histories of victimization, trauma, and learning disabilities than nonincarcerated youth.
