APA'S Women Presidents Gather for Historic Photo

Courtesy of Leah Dickstein, M.D.
When Thomas Kirkbride and 12 other superintendents of mental institutions gathered in Philadelphia in 1844 and created what became APA, not a founding mother was found among them. And while it took many years before a woman was elected president of the nation's oldest medical specialty society, in the past two decades five of APA's presidents have been women. They gathered for a photo at APA's 2005 annual meeting in Atlanta: (from left) Mary Jane England, M.D., who served for the 1995-1996 term; Carol Nadelson, M.D., 1985-1986; Elissa Benedek, M.D., 1990-1991; Marcia Goin, M.D., 2003-2004; and Michelle Riba, M.D., 2004-2005.
