Tips for Parents

Summer Camp

Choose a camp that is suited to your child's temperament, personality, and interests.
Involve your child in choosing the camp.
If your child is shy, consider selecting a camp where the child knows and likes at least one other child. Having one friend makes it easier to meet other kids.

Travel

If your child is old enough, let him or her help plan the trip.
Let your child bring something familiar from home, such as a stuffed animal, blanket, or favorite toy.
Don't force kids to tolerate extended “adult activities” such as long museum visits, formal dinners, or plays in languages they don't understand. Plan child-oriented activities by visiting parks, zoos, and children's museums.

School

Before the school year begins, visit the school with your child and tour the classroom, playground, and cafeteria your child will be using.
Talk about what school will be like and what will happen throughout a typical day.
After the school year begins, talk to your child about what happened each day and provide positive feedback about new experiences.
