Thanks to a very successful benefit during this year's APA annual meeting in Toronto, the American Psychiatric Foundation (APF) was able to add about $188,000 to the funds available for program grants, research funding, and awards to outstanding projects.
The May 20 benefit was held at the Royal Ontario Museum, and contributors had the opportunity to tour the museum's impressive collections of art and artifacts between sampling a wide array of international foods and applauding programs that were presented with awards by APF President Altha Stewart, M.D.
The awards, which come with a $5,000 check, went to programs that made contributions to advancing minority mental health or increasing access to services for minority populations.
This year's winners were La Clinica Del Pueblo in Washington, D.C., the Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic, Asian Community Mental Health Services in Oakland, Calif., and Central Clinic—Empowerment for Success in Cincinnati.
In addition, certificates of recognition went to the New Jersey Mental Health Institute, the Mt. Sinai Hospital Assertive Community Treatment Team, and the University of Texas at Brownsville Community Counseling Clinic.
Most of the financial support for the event was provided by 14 pharmaceutical and other companies.
