Wide Range of Events Planned

Here is the schedule of the full-day program on Saturday, October 7, sponsored by the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists at APA's 2006 Institute on Psychiatric Services. All sessions are at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

8 a.m.-9:30 a.m.

Lecture: “Lesbian and Gay Families” Susan Vaughan, M.D., and Ellen Haller, M.D.

10 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Workshop: “Sex and Sexuality and Special Populations Among Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual People”
Robert Cabaj, M.D., Robert Kertzner, M.D., Ronald Hellman, M.D., and Samantha Kelleher, M.D.
Topics include methamphetamine abuse, midlife issues, major mental illness, and eating disorders.

1:30 p.m.-3 p.m.

APA's John Fryer, M.D., Award Lecture: “Gay, Proud, and Healthy: From Heresy to Humdrum”
Frank Kameny, Ph.D., and Barbara Gittings Kameny and Gittings will provide an illustrated historical talk and discuss the role of Dr. H. Anonymous (John Fryer, M.D.) in protesting APA's position on homosexuality and in facilitating the examination of scientific data that led to the elimination of homosexuality as a mental illness in 1973.

3:30 p.m.-5 p.m.

Workshop: “Demons, Satan, Science, and Homosexuality: A Film Analysis”
David Scasta, M.D., Alicia Salzer, M.D., Mary Barber, M.D., and the Rev. Larry Waltz
This workshop will feature the AGLP-produced film “Abomination: Homosexuality and the Ex-Gay Movement,” focusing on the harms of conversion, or “reparative,” therapy.

6 p.m.

Reception for APA's John Fryer awardees: The location will be published in the program book distributed on site.
