Letters to the Editor
Published Online: 15 September 2006
The glaring mismanagement of the evacuation of New Orleans in the face of Hurricane Katrina and the storm's after-math are examples of government failure to aid those in need. Dr. Ruiz, in his column in the July 7 issue, was straightforward and direct in taking our government to task for such failures. I was pleased to read that he said it like he saw it and did not soften has statements with generalities. The poor of New Orleans, who are predominately African American, have not been given adequate support in their recovery efforts. He is also correct in urging us to continue our fight against discrimination.
The response of psychiatrists both through their professional organization and as individuals was in direct contrast to that of the federal government. Many psychiatrists from all over the country gave of their time and energy to help the hurricane victims. Of this we can be proud. We can also be proud that APA's president speaks out against injustice and prejudice.
