Advice in a Nutshell

African-American women leaders at APA had this advice for other women who are members of a minority and aspire to hold leadership positions in organized psychiatry:
Find a mentor.
Find colleagues who share your professional vision.
Develop an area of expertise.
Never be afraid of challenges.
Look for chances to learn new skills.
Set realistic expectations.
Communicate clearly about what you need and what you expect from others.
Be creative—think outside the box.
Don't denigrate others.
