Sweet Dreams

I was pleased to find a new, simple, easy-to-use, inexpensive treatment for an all-too-common psychiatric problem so succinctly conveyed on the front page of the February 3 issue: “Diagnostic Manual Could Be Helpful Sleep Aid.”
I rushed to try it out, and I am delighted to report that it is 97 percent effective when used by a biopsychosocially oriented psychiatrist in his mid-50s. As I plan to try this treatment with a variety of patients with different diagnoses and socioeconomic characteristics, I will report back the results of my expanded study in the near future.
I expect the treatment will be widely applicable. At present I recommend the following procedure:
•
Turn off bright lights, radios, and televisions. You may leave on a dim bedside lamp, but it is not essential.
•
Get into bed, lie down, and lean against a comfortable pillow.
•
Start reading the manual from page 1. Do not skip to material that has particular interest for you.
•
Continue until you lose consciousness. On average this will take less than seven minutes.
If you get through the entire manual by morning, you may be very tired the next day, but at least you will be prepared for your next ABPN board examination.
