Business Meeting, Convocation Are Early Highlights

Three sessions important to all APA members will be held at APA's 2006 annual meeting in Toronto on Sunday and Monday, May 21 and 22.
The Business Meeting will be convened on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in Room 106, Level 100, in the Toronto Convention Centre North. APA officers will make their annual reports to members, and members are invited to address the group about any issues.
At 5 p.m. Sunday, the Opening Session will be held in Exhibit Hall A, Level 300, in the Toronto Convention Centre North. The centerpieces of the session are speeches by outgoing APA President Steven Sharfstein, M.D., and incoming APA President Pedro Ruiz, M.D.
The Convocation of Fellows will be held the next day at 5:30 p.m. in Exhibit Hall A, Level 300, of the Toronto Convention Centre North. Sharfstein will present his presidential commendations and a number of APA-supported awards. The annual William C. Menninger Memorial Convocation Lecture will be presented by David K. Shipler.
Shipler won the Pulitizer Prize in 1987 for his nonfiction book Wounded Spirits, Arab and Jew in the Promised Land. This book was born out of his experiences as a New York Times correspondent in Jerusalem. He also wrote A Country of Strangers: Blacks and Whites in America and was invited to participate in President Clinton's first town meeting on race relations. Shipler's most recent book, The Working Poor: Invisible in America, highlights his keen understanding of the challenges and barriers faced daily by people who live in poverty. ▪
