'Conversations' Event

The American Psychiatric Foundation is following up on the great success it has enjoyed at the past six APA annual meetings with its“ Conversations” event by sponsoring a similar event at APA's 2007 Institute on Psychiatric Services for the first time.
This inaugural “Conversations” event will be particularly poignant given its New Orleans location (see Institute Promises to Be Fulfilling and Fun). Musicians from the area will gather to tell their stories of survival and recovery after Hurricane Katrina, as well as to share their music.
The foundation created “Conversations” so that psychiatrists would have an opportunity to hear from and interact with people whose daily liveshave been affected by mental health problems and serious mental illness.
The event will be held Saturday, October 13, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Mardi Gras Ballroom on the third floor of the New Orleans Marriott.
The foundation will also host a silent auction during the event. The proceeds will benefit several New Orleans mental health groups and the foundation. Winners need not be present to win.
The foundation's sixth annual “Conversations” at APA's 2007 annual meeting featured Brooke Shields and drew a standing-room-only crowd (Psychiatric News, July 6). DVDs of the session may be ordered by sending an e-mail to [email protected].
“Conversations” is supported by an unrestricted educational grant from AstraZeneca. ▪
