Hop Aboard for an Evening to Benefit the Foundation

If you want to go places, set your compass for Union Station when you are in town for APA's 2008 annual meeting in May. That's where the American Psychiatric Foundation will be holding its annual benefit, with the theme“ Windows on Washington.” The benefit will be held Saturday, May 3, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the East Hall of Union Station. Ticket information appears below.
Attendees will enjoy fine cuisine and live music in the historic building that has played host to 17 presidents and countless foreign dignitaries.
The evening's events include a silent auction and a presentation of the Awards for Advancing Minority Health. Proceeds from the benefit go toward supporting the foundation's grants, programs, research funding, and awards that advance public understanding of mental illnesses as real and treatable.
Union Station isn't just another stop on the way to somewhere else. When it opened on October 27, 1907, it was the largest train station in the world and is considered to be one of the finest examples of the Beaux-Arts style of architecture. Through the years, wear and tear got the better of the once magnificent building, but it was restored to its former glory in 1988 after three years of renovation at a cost of $160 million.
Union Station is the most visited site in the nation's capital, with over 3.2 million visitors a year. More than Amtrak's headquarters, the station is now a lively retail center with more than 130 shops and restaurants and a nine-screen movie complex. World-class exhibitions and international cultural events are hosted here for the public, along with private events such as presidential inaugural balls and citywide galas.
Tickets for the benefit cost $150 per person if purchased by April 1 and $175 per person thereafter. They may be ordered by calling (703) 907-8512.
Union Station is located at 50 Massachusetts Avenue N.E. It is a short taxi ride from the Washington Convention Center or can be accessed by Metrorail on the Red Line.
