Cyber-Sleuthing Goes Both Ways

Here are some pointers that presenters offered at an APA annual meeting session on psychiatrists and patients “Googling” each other.“ Proceed with caution—if at all” was the consensus.
•
Manage your own online presence and know how your patients would see you if they Google you.
•
Be cautions when making connections on social networks such as Facebook.
•
Discuss the issue of online privacy with trainees and/or supervisors.
•
Respect patients' online presence. Consider your own motive: Are you looking up a patient out of curiosity or do you have a clear therapeutic purpose? If you look patients up online, “it should not be done routinely, automatically, and lightly.”
•
Be aware of potential consequences of uncovering private, personal information outside therapy and be wary of potential inaccuracy of Internet data.
•
Value your own time and the boundary of treatment before spending nights and weekends online looking at patients' blogs. ▪
