APA Institute Invites Research From Residents

APA's 61st Institute on Psychiatric Services in New York City this fall will offer numerous academic enrichment opportunities for psychiatry residents, including the opportunity to present original research at a national meeting.

The institute, which will be held October 8 to 11, will offer another interesting scientific program and allow residents an excellent opportunity for learning and networking with experts and leaders in psychiatry from around the country.

Among the sessions for residents are the “Meet the Experts” luncheon, which allows for formal and informal discussions with leaders in various psychiatric specialties; a full-day session on working with homeless mentally ill individuals; full-day immersion courses that offer in-depth training and/or certification on a variety of topics; mentoring opportunities; and clinical practice pearls in general and public psychiatry. Workshops, innovative programs, and symposia will address a wide range of contemporary topics such as access to psychiatric care, cultural competency, PTSD in military populations, immigrant and international mental health, issues related to chronic illness such as obesity and HIV, telepsychiatry, and much more. The institute will also host general receptions, and there will be daily prize drawings in the Exhibit Hall. In addition, the institute will feature poster sessions, which give residents an opportunity to present original research.

Residents who have research ideas or scholarly activities that they would like to share in a national forum are strongly encouraged to submit a poster for possible inclusion in the program.

Poster submissions in all areas of psychiatric research are welcome. The poster sessions will make it easy for residents working on research projects to present their findings to a national audience. Training departments often pay for registration and/or travel if the resident is also presenting a poster. In the past, approximately 90 percent of all poster submissions were accepted for presentation.
