Actions Required to Qualify for EHR Payment

Psychiatrists and other physicians must use qualifying electronic health record (EHR) systems to perform 15 “core” actions and five of 10 optional actions for each patient before they can qualify for federal incentive payments for using EHR systems.
These are the 15 core actions required for each patient:
Using CPOE (computerized physician order entry) codes
Using allergy checks
Using electronic prescribing
Recording demographic data
Recording diagnoses
Recording current prescriptions
Recording medication allergies
Recording vital signs (including blood pressure and BMI)
Recording smoking status
Selecting and tracking a specialty-specific clinical measure
Reporting an ambulatory-care quality measure
Providing patients with an electronic copy of their health information
Providing patients with a clinical summary of each office visit
Allowing electronic exchange of patient data with other clinicians
Maintaining electronic privacy protections.
Clinicians also must choose five of 10 optional actions to undertake with their EHR systems from among the following:
Conducting drug formulary checks
Adding lab results to the EHR
Generating a list of patients with a specific condition
Sending patient reminders for needed care
Providing patient access to their updated medical information
Suggesting patient-specific education resources
Performing medication reconciliation as needed for new patients
Providing a medical summary to a clinician who referred a patient
Testing their ability to submit patient data to an immunization registry
Testing their ability to submit electronic syndromic surveillance data.
More information on required clinician actions for EHR-related federal payment is posted at <www.ama-assn.org/ama1/pub/upload/mm/399/ehr-meaningful-use-criteria.pdf>.
