APA Announces Candidates for 2012 Election

Abstract

Three psychiatrists with extensive APA experience are nominated to compete for the post of president-elect in the next APA election.
Renée Binder, M.D., of San Francisco, Mary Helen Davis, M.D., of Louisville, Ky., and Jeffrey Lieberman, M.D., of New York City have been tapped by APA's Nominating Committee to face off for the president-elect post in APA's 2012 election.
APA's Nominating Committee has selected three candidates to run for APA president-elect in the Association's 2012 election. They are (from left) Renée Binder, M.D., of San Francisco, Mary Helen Davis, M.D., of Louisville, Ky., and Jeffrey Lieberman, M.D., of New York City. APA members should note that the campaign period has been shortened this year. Ballots will be mailed or e-mailed to voting members on January 3, 2012; online votes must be cast and paper ballots received by January 31 at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
Binder is a professor and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of California, San Francisco, and a past trustee-at-large. Davis is director of behavioral oncology at the Norton Cancer Institute in Louisville, Ky., and a past Area 5 Trustee. Lieberman is a professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and chair of APA's Council on Research and Quality Care.
The position of treasurer is also up for election this year, having been separated a few years ago from the combined position of secretary-treasurer. The incumbent, David Fassler M.D., of Burlington, Vt., is vying for the post against Robert Feder, M.D., of Manchester, N.H.
The candidates for trustee-at-large are Anita Everett, M.D., of Glenwood, Md., and Bruce Hershfield, M.D., of Sparks Glenco, Md.
The race for early career psychiatrist trustee-at-large has three candidates competing for the position: Steve Koh, M.D., of La Jolla, Calif., Molly McVoy, M.D., of Cleveland, and Jose Vito, M.D., of New York City.
Three of APA's seven Areas will vote for trustees in the next election. In elections for Area trustee, the Area Council rather than the APA Nominating Committee chooses the candidates.
Facing off for Area 1 trustee are Jeffrey Geller, M.D., of Worcester, Mass.,and Gail Robinson, M.D., of Toronto. Area 1 encompasses New England and Eastern Canada.
The candidates for Area 4 trustee are Ronald Burd, M.D., of Fargo, N.D., and Judith Kashtan, M.D., of Minneapolis. Area 4 encompasses the North Central United States.
Jeffrey Akaka, M.D., of Honolulu will run against Annette Matthews, M.D., of Portland, Ore., in Area 7, which encompasses the western continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska, and Western Canada.
Also to be elected is the member-in-training trustee-elect (MITTE) in another three-way race. The candidates are Andrea Brandon, M.D., of New York City, Brian Hurley, M.D., of Allston, Mass., and Erik Vanderlip, M.D., of Iowa City, Iowa.
APA announced the slate of candidates October 31, and while it is considered public, it is not official until the Board approves it at its December meeting.
All members for whom APA has a valid e-mail address on file will receive an electronic ballot. Other members will receive a paper ballot along with instructions on how to vote online if they so choose. Voting begins on January 3, 2012; online votes must be cast and paper ballots received by January 31 at 5 p.m. Eastern time. Information on the candidates will be posted online and appear in a booklet accompanying the paper ballot.
More information on the election process is posted at < www.psych.org/Resources/Governance/Elections.aspx >. Questions, comments, and concerns should be sent to [email protected].
