Riba has also served as president of the Association for Academic Psychiatry and the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training, and she is the Zone 2 representative to the World Psychiatric Association. She also holds several leadership positions at the University of Michigan—associate chair for integrated medical and psychiatric services in the Department of Psychiatry, director of the PsychOncology Program at the Comprehensive Cancer Center, and associate director of the Comprehensive Depression Center and the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research.
Riba has been a leading advocate for psychoncology (a term she prefers to psycho-oncology), and told Psychiatric News she believes the award "recognizes the importance of psychiatric issues for patients with cancer."
APA President Carol Bernstein, M.D., commented, "We are enormously pleased at Michelle's getting this recognition. It also shows once again how much psychiatry contributes to the practice of so many fields of medicine."
