Slate of Candidates Announced for APA’s 2013 Election

Abstract

Election season has begun at APA as the Nominating Committee announces its slate of candidates who will compete for several Board of Trustees positions. Two APA Areas will be choosing their trustee this year.
Paul Summergrad, M.D., of Boston, Mass., and Robert Ursano, M.D., of Bethesda, Md., have been tapped by APA’s Nominating Committee to face off for the president-elect post in APA’s 2013 election.
APA’s Nominating Committee has selected two candidates to run for APA president-elect in the Association’s 2013 election. They are (from left) Paul Summergrad, M.D., of Boston and Robert Ursano, M.D., of Bethesda, Md. APA members should note that the campaign period was shortened last year. Ballots will be mailed or e-mailed to voting members on January 2; online votes must be cast and paper ballots received by January 31 at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
Summergrad is the Dr. Frances S. Arkin Professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and a professor of medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine as well as psychiatrist-in-chief at Tufts Medical Center. He is also chair of the APA Board of Trustees Ad Hoc Work Group on the Role of Psychiatry in Health Care Reform and a member of the APA DSM-5 Scientific Review Committee. Ursano is a professor of psychiatry and neuroscience and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, as well as director of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress. He is chair of APA’s Committee on Psychiatric Dimensions of Disasters and the editor of Psychiatry, and is on the teaching faculty at the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute.
The position of secretary is also up for election this year, having been separated a few years ago from the combined position of secretary-treasurer. The nominees are Maria Oquendo, M.D., of New York, and Ann Marie Sullivan, M.D., also of New York.
The candidates for minority/underrepresented (MUR) trustee—a new position on the Board of Trustees elected by eligible APA voting members belonging to an Assembly MUR caucus— are Renato Alarćon, M.D., of Oakland, Calif., and Stephen McLeod-Bryant, M.D., of Charleston, S.C.
Two of APA’s seven Areas will vote for trustees in the next election. In elections for Area trustee, the Area Council rather than the APA Nominating Committee chooses the candidates.
Facing off for Area 3 trustee are Brian Crowley, M.D., of Washington, D.C., who is running for a second term, Bruce Hershfield, M.D., of Sparks Glenco, Md., and Joseph Napoli, M.D., of Fort Lee, N.J. Area 3 encompasses Washington, D.C., and the mid-Atlantic area.
The candidates for Area 6 trustee are Marc Graff, M.D., of Porter Ranch, Calif., and Donald Sharps, M.D., of Newport Beach, Calif. Area 6 encompasses all of the California district branches.
Also to be elected is the member-in-training trustee-elect (MITTE) in a three-way race. The candidates are Lara Cox, M.D., M.S., of New York, Kathryn Kenney, D.O., M.B.A., of Dayton, Ohio, and Timothy Kreider, M.D., Ph.D., of Philadelphia.
APA announced the slate of candidates November 1, and while it is considered public, it is not official until the Board approves it at its December meeting.
All members for whom APA has a valid e-mail address on file will receive an electronic ballot. Other members will receive a paper ballot along with instructions on how to vote online if they so choose. All candidates and their supporters should review APA’s updated Election Guidelines (APA’s Election Guidelines Emphasize Dignity, Courtesy, and Fairness). Election information is posted on APA’s Web site at www. psychiatry.org/network/board-of-trustees/apa-national-elections and available by e-mail at [email protected]. .
