APA Election Complaint

It was very disappointing to turn to Psychiatric News to learn about the candidates running in APA’s 2012 election and find one solitary page with absolutely nothing about any of the candidates.
No one had bothered to ask them questions about what they would do, and one was referred to their Web sites if they happened to have one.
I was utterly disgusted, and it is extraordinarily unprofessional for our organization because it looks as if some small clique is trying to control APA.

Response from Robert Kelly, M.D., chair of APA’s Elections Committee:
In 2010, the national election cycle was shortened by two months to improve the election experience. The new schedule went into effect beginning with this year’s election. Because of strict print deadlines and cost considerations, candidate information is now provided electronically for easy reference by voters, and a printed version is mailed with a paper ballot to APA members for whom APA does not have a valid e-mail address. Members may contact candidates directly using information available online.
Enhancing interaction between candidates and members is a priority that is frequently discussed by APA leadership. Toward that goal your suggestions are welcome. Please send your comments or questions to [email protected].
ROBERT KELLY, M.D.
Chair of APA’s Elections Committee
