Abstract

The developing interaction of mental health care and general health care, as exemplified by the increased use of general hospital psychiatric units, has been caused by a number of factors. Among them are factors from within the field of psychiatry and trends occurring in the larger context of health services delivery and financing. The author discusses these factors and reviews the nature of psychiatric services in a general hospital, the educational challenges associated with greater mental health-general health interaction, the opportunities that interaction offers to both systems, and the responsibilities placed on mental health professionals.
