Recognizing Dissociative Disorders in Patients With Chemical Dependency

Abstract

Atypical relapses and unusually intense emotional pain in patients being treated for chemical dependency can alert clinicians to the possibility of comorbid dissociative disorders. The DES can be given as a simple screening instrument. Diagnoses should be based on a follow-up clinical interview and may be supported by administration of the DDIS or SCID-D. Referral for concurrent individual psychotherapy to a clinician knowledgeable about dissociative disorders is recommended.
