Substance Abuse Among Patients Presenting at an Inner-City Psychiatric Emergency Room

Abstract

This study showed a high prevalence of cocaine abuse among patients presenting to a psychiatric emergency service. We strongly recommend routine toxicological screening in addition to systematic questioning about past drug use for all patients aged 18 to 50 presenting at innercity psychiatric emergency rooms who have not admitted to recent drug use. Toxicological screening of patients outside this age range may also provide important information.
