Instructing a young colleague or trainee to write a narrative report can make school visits a possibility even after therapy has begun. The task for the observer is to report on what is happening in the classroom, in terms of teacher and other students, always with an eye on what the patient is doing. It helps to tell the observer that hyperbolic adjectives and evaluative words should be minimized: “the child was active” is preferable to “the child was wild.” Similarly, “the teacher called the child’s name four times” is preferable to “the teacher yelled the child’s name.” Just the facts, please!
