THE USE OF PERPHENAZINE IN THE TREATMENT OF DRUG RESISTANT SCHIZOPHRENICS

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

In summary, we feel that perphenazine is a noteworthy means for treating most psychoses. To us, it is not just another tranquilizer. In our experience, it is obviously a most effective drug which often produces results where other therapies have miserably failed. The extent of improvement depends a great deal, however, on how the drug is used.
The treatment must be individualized and requires care and thought.
The drug appears to be faster acting at doses lower than that required with other phenothiazines.
This study has been but a pilot investigation, but from our limited experience, we would rate the drug as highly effective in modifying behavior, attitudes, accelerating mentation, promoting awareness of self, environment, development of insight and most important, this drug is very effective in reintegrating the personality structure of the individual to normalcy.
