A Psychiatric Contribution to Alleviating Hard-Core Unemployment

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

The authors report on a program of mental health consultation to personnel at eight youth and adult opportunity centers offering job placement and other vocational services to clients in poverty areas of San Francisco. In addition to its benefit for the consultees, the program has been a useful field experience for trainee mental health consultants. Trainees are given an opportunity to observe one method of assistance for a population of individuals who often have severe emotional problems but are not ordinarily seen in traditional mental health settings.
