Abstract

Two simple variables, instruction and reinforcement, were found to modify chronic neurotic behavior. During the experimental procedure precise control of long-established symptomatic behavior was demonstrated. Findings suggest that behavior to be changed by psychotherapy must be precisely defined and exact techniques introduced to change it. To the authors, the experimental method described here appears to be feasible and useful in psychotherapy research.
