Abstract

After describing the atrocious crimes characteristic of the period known as La Violencia in Colombia, the author presents a formulation about the psychological factors that may have contributed to their commission. The early background of the bandolero criminal type characteristically included an atmosphere of social, economic, religious, and familial repression. When a state of social and political unrest arose in the country, bringing about the collapse of the traditional repressive forces, a chain of psychological developments was begun that culminated in the unleashing of intense destructive rage.
