Abstract

The author gives a historical review of three main types of violence in the U. S. and their social and psychological causes. He feels that we have been more willing to settle for violence than to attend to the social conflicts which generate it. Using an analogy from psychotherapy, he says a first step toward dealing with the underlying problem would be acknowledging its existence; then we should approach its solution through attempts to share power with previously excluded groups.
