A Post-Freudian Comment on Sexuality

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

There exists a large gap in our knowledge and understanding of the correlations between adequate sexual functioning and maturity. From the classic psychoanalytic viewpoint, only those who have reached the genital stage of psychosexual development should be able to function in a sexually adequate way. The author suggests that this is unrealistic and that if in a sexual setting where there is rapprochement a neurotic person is accepted on his terms, adequate functioning may well be possible. Responsibility as part of the patient's interpersonal relationships is also examined.
