Abstract

Following an increase in the intake of dietary sodium during treatment with lithium carbonate, the manic symptoms of six patients were observed to increase prior to or coincident with the reduction of side effects. Although sodium intake does influence lithium carbonate treatment, the data suggest that the therapeutic index of lithium carbonate is not improved by increasing dietary sodium.
