Safety of High-Dose Tricyclic Antidepressant Therapy

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

The authors report on a series of depressed inpatients and outpatients who received greater-than-recommended doses of the tricyclic antidepressants for 1,505 patient days. These patients tolerated the drugs with a minimum of side effects and, when tested, showed no evidence of hematologic, hepatic, or ocular damage. The authors give some possible explanations for the individual variations in tolerance and response to this high-dose regimen.
