Monkey Psychiatrists

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

Most efforts that have been made to reverse the effects of isolation on monkeys have been unsuccessful. The authors report on successful rehabilitation through the use of "therapist" monkeys. The therapists, three months younger than the isolate monkeys, initiated social contact in a nonthreatening manner. Within six months, the isolates' disturbance behaviors had nearly disappeared and they displayed normal age-appropriate social and play behaviors.
