When Patients Cry
When patients cryI encourage them to cry
The eyes swell shutSaturated with sadnessThen comes the first dropThe solitary tearThe first messenger of inner miseryThat is hastily wiped awayIn a pathetic attemptTo delay others that might follow
For this onslaught could last a dayOr for forty days and nightsAnd there is doubt the vessel will holdTo weather such a stormBut instead be an ensnaring cageBroken and dashed upon the rocksDescending to the murky depthsAs one is left to drown in their sorrows
But when patients cryI encourage them to cry
Two by two we perfect the craftTwo by two we collect the best attributesThe rest are left out to the elementsIn this man-made sanctuaryIn this arc of solacePatient and physicianWe huddle togetherAnticipating the tearsAnd the passing of final judgement
When the deluge finally arrivesThe psyche is flooded with emotionsAnd feelings rageOld sins are washed asideThoughts of wrath and un-forgivenessImperfections and accusationsAll flow away with the edging tideAnd when the wailing stopsWhen the floodgates closeLike exterior doors, the eyes are openedReady to explore this brave new world
When patients cryI encourage them to cry
For the alternative is much worseWhen no tears comeThe soul becomes a parched desertAnd the spirit wanders lostIn a place uninhabitable for lifeTormented by inner demonsUnder temptation that can last a dayOr for forty days and nightsUntil one simply gives inTo dwell among the bleached skeletonsGhastly reminders of the flaws of one's past
So, when patients cryI encourage them to cry
