In this book we have described a rigorous method of conducting a trauma inquiry that applies the evidence-based knowledge of imaginal exposure, cognitive restructuring, and desensitization within a traditional psychotherapeutic context. Trauma-centered psychotherapy as presented here follows a set of general assumptions and principles and is therefore a perspective on trauma treatment rather than a new or independent method of treatment. The process we outline is intended to be useful to therapists of any theoretical persuasion, using a wide range of therapeutic methods, when the necessity of conducting an in-depth trauma inquiry arises.
